They are ill discoverers that think there is no land, when they can see nothing but the sea.

Summertime in Prague
when blood was warm, when blood was young
After all those tears
after all those years
I long for...

Summertime in Prague
we were so rich without a dime
when I was your queen
and you were my king
without a palace

We would sleep in cheap hotels
and wake up from the sound
of bells on Sundays
We would only drink cheap wine
but I was yours and you were mine

Summertime in Prague
I was a fool I could not see
that you were ment to be
the only one for me
now I long for...

We would sleep in cheap hotels
and wake up from the sound
of bells on Sundays
We would only drink cheap wine
but I was yours and ou were mine

Summertime in Prague
when blood was warm, when blood was young
After all those tears
after all those years
I long for...

Summertime in Prague...

Darling Violetta - I want to kill you

"I...want...to...kill...you
When you least expect it
I'll bash your brains in
When you least expect it

You're afraid of flying
Afraid of losing your mind
But I don't want to know you
Now there's no time

It's both a lovely and a fearful thing
To be captured by all of your feelings

I breathe into you
Into you

You run to me and
Don't even know my name
Desire's slowly becoming
Your great escape

You let me wonder
Now I'll let you burn
I promise nothing
But still you return to me

I breathe into you
I breathe into you
You are real

I am walking through the morning
Dandelion stares in my eyes
I wish you were caught by now
I'm afraid of what they'll find

Take the box of magic
Lay it in the back of your mind
Can we wash in the morphine

After we eat we'll be fine
You're the lonely lovers
I've only known a few

Take me within and you'll know what love is...easy

Let me watch you dance
Let me watch you sleep

Kiss her with your tongue
And you'll crawl to me again

Can you feel it ?
Can you feel it ?
Can you feel it ?

I breathe into you
I breathe into you
You are real

I breathe into you
I breathe into you
You are real"

Elentári

Μ' αγαπάει - δε μ' αγαπάει; Ρέστα ή πάσο; Καλός ή κακός; Να μείνω ή να φύγω; Εχθρός ή φίλος;

Πώς όμως να κρίνουμε κάποιον αν πιστέψουμε ότι στη βάση των επιλογών του δεν βρίσκεται η κακή επιλογή σε ένα ηθικό δίλημμα αλλά αντικειμενικοί παράγοντες πέρα απο την ηθική του;

Πώς να καταδικάσουμε κάποιον που τον θεωρούμε έρμαιο των υπερδραστήριων ενζύμων του, της σεροτονίνης που, αρρύθμιστη, πλημμυρίζει τις συνάψεις του και των ελαττωματικών του διαύλων που αφήνουν τα ιόντα να στήνουν γλέντι πάνω στις μεμβράνες των νευρώνων του;

Αν δεν μπορεί να αγαπήσει πραγματικά, πώς να μπορέσει να μείνει πιστή;
Αν δεν μπορεί να ελέγξει την επιθετικότητά του, πώς να μήν σκοτώσει;

Αυτό σημαίνει όμως ότι οι άνθρωποι δεν μπορούν να διορθωθούν; Αυτό σημαίνει ότι δεν πρέπει να συγχωρούμε;

Μεγάλωσε σε μια διαλυμένη οικογένεια. Αν μεγάλωνε με αγάπη, παρά τους ελαττωματικούς της διαύλους, μήπως θα μπορούσε κι αυτή να αγαπήσει;

Μπορεί όμως κάποιος να είναι τόσο σωστός ώστε να καταδικάζει τους άλλους τόσο αβίαστα;

Μήπως δεν ήταν μεγαλύτερη τρέλα, αργότερα, τότε που πραγματικά αγάπησα μια Αλεπού;

Infected Mushroom - Becoming Insane (Vicious Delicious LP, 2007)

Dime todo lo que pasó
No me di cuenta ni quién me pegó
Todo da vueltas como un carrusel,
Locura recorre todita mi piel.

Wake me up before I change again
Remind me the story that I won't get insane
Tell me why it´s always the same

Explain me the reason why I´m so much in pain

Before I change again...

Perdiendo...

voy perdiendo....

El suelo!

Ή μήπως τα θυμάμαι ανάποδα και η Νο 2 είχε το πορτοκαλί, αντί για τη Νο 1;

Η σχέση της με τον Goethe ήταν όντως ρομαντικού χαρακτήρα; Ήταν όντως η Αθάνατη Αγαπημένη του Beethoven;

Die Unsterbliche Geliebte.

Rude Awakening!

Sherilyn Fenn, photo by George Hurrell

Today is the birthday of actress Sherilyn Fenn.

She is rather well known from her role as Audrey Horne in the "Twin Peaks" series and of course from her leading role in "Boxing Helena".

However, what I really loved from her work is the sitcom "Rude Awakening", which used to be aired after midnight in the greek TV.

Sherilyn Fenn stars as Billie Frank, an ex soap-opera star that faces huge problems, including sex-addiction, alcoholism and an insufferable rich, single mother Trudy Frank (Lynn Redgrave).

Although rather bitter, Billie tries to gather the pieces of her life but always seems to fail as various temptations draw her back into a dead-end. However her sharp sense of humour always seems to carry her through even when she is joking not only with her own problems but with the problems of others (especially fellow alcoholics from Alcoholics Anonymous sessions).

As a memorable punchline, Tim Curry as a guest star was quarrelling with the insufferable Trudy, Billie's mother, so she responded with something along the lines of "What do YOU know, you, with your last year's Armani suit..."

The show was a fantastic asset for late-night TV and it is rather unfortunate that it was cancelled after the third season (with greek airings not even reaching that far...)

Too bad.. anyway, Happy Birthday Sherilyn!!

Hang up the chick habit! -
Laisse tomber les filles

For George K., a word of caution...

Hang up the chick habit
hang it up, daddy,
or you'll be alone in a quick
hang up the chick habit
hang it up, daddy,
or you'll never get another fix

I'm telling you it's not a trick
pay attention, don't be thick
or you're liable to get licked

You're gonna see the reason why
when they're spitting in your eye
they'll be spitting in your eye

Hang up the chick habit
hang it up, daddy,
a girl's not a tonic or a pill

Hang up the chick habit
hang it up, daddy,
you're just jonesing for a spill

Oh, how your bubble's gonna burst
when you meet another nurse
she'll be driving in a hearse

You're gonna need a heap of glue
when they all catch up with you
and they cut you up in two

Now your ears are ringing
the birds have stopped their singing
everything is turning grey

No candy in your till
no cutie left to thrill
you're alone on a Tuesday

Hang up the chick habit
hang it up, daddy,
or you'll be alone in a quick
hang up the chick habit
hang it up, daddy,
or you'll never get another fix

I'm telling you it's not a trick
pay attention, don't be thick
or you're liable to get licked

You're gonna see the reason why
when they're spitting in your eye
they'll be spitting in your eye

PS Original song "Laisse tomber les filles" by Serge Gainsbourg. "Chick Habit" sung by April March with English lyrics by her, featured in the Quentin Tarantino movie OST "Deathproof".

La jolie rousse - The pretty redhead

About a month ago I came across a book by Umberto Eco: Opera Aperta : Forma e indeterminazione nelle poetiche contemporanee. Although the phonological experiments on Joyce's Ulysses translations being read concurrently (or rather, consecutively in fugue) are not my bag, I knew that I would be fascinated once more by Eco's ability to put names to faces (i.e. to be able to illustrate a point with definitive and authoritative examples). Plus it had excited my interest by an extensive reference to Norbert Wiener's Information Theory.

These are points, however, that I would like to explore in future posts.

The introduction to the First Edition (Bompiani, Milano, 1962) had a few lines by Guillaume Apollinaire as a header. These were from the poem "La Jolie Rousse" (The Pretty Redhead), written for his beloved Jacqueline Kolb. I can find no better day to post this excellent and wonderfully fitting poem that I found by pure chance (or just by looking at the right places...)

THE PRETTY REDHEAD

Here I am before all, a man full of meaning
Learned on life and death about anything a living man could know
Having tried the pains and the joys of love
Having at some point or the other imposed his ideas
Learned on many languages
Having travelled not a little
Having seen the war through both Artillery and Infantry
Wounded in the head, trephined under chloroforme
Having lost his best friends in that fearful struggle
I know of the old and the new as much as any man by himself can know of these two
And without worrying myself much about that war today
Between you and for you my friends
I arbitrate that long quarrel between tradition and innovation
Between Order and the Adventure

You whose mouth has been made in the image of God's
Mouth which is order itself
Be indulgent when you compare us
To those who were the perfection of order
Us who go questing for the adventure in all places

We are not your enemies
We want to give you vast and strange domains
Where the blossoming mystery offers itself to those who would pluck it
There they are New fires Colours unseen before
A thousand unimaginable phantoms
Which must be given reality

We want to explore the bounty enormous country where everything is hushed
There is also time, which can be driven away or made to return
Pity for us who continually fight at the frontiers
Of infinity and of the future
Pity for our errors pity for our sins

Here comes summer the violent season
And my youth is dead along with springtime
O Sun it is the time of blazing Reason
And I wait

To always follow the noble and gentle form
That she dons to make me love her solely

She comes and she attracts me like a magnet does to iron

She has the charming aspect

Of an adorable redhead

Her hair are made of gold one would say
A beautiful shining that stays
Or those flames that prance about
In the fading tea-rose

But laugh at me laugh
Men from everywhere but above all people from here

Because there are many things that I dare not tell you

Many things that you would not let me say

Have pity on me

Lessons from the past : Love

I do not exactly welcome hardship but sometimes it is necessary if we are to develop the skills and stamina needed to face the world and live a full life. A cushy life will breed an idle mind.

To quote from Frank Herbert's masterpiece, Dune: " '
There should be a science of discontent. People need hard times and oppression to develop psychic muscle' -from "The Collected Sayings of Muad'dib" by the Princess Irulan"

However, the blows of the year 2007 were particularly hard in a very nasty way. Anathema to the year 2007. Its memory shall live in infamy.
Anathema sit, anathema, anathema.

I will not mention the disastrous fires of the summer which destroyed a good portion of our forestland, caused a deplorable number of casualties and left us so numb that we did not even have the good sense of coming out to the streets with tar, feather and a hefty length of rope for each member of the parliament (and each candidate of the September elections as well).

The worst of that year for my family came in springtime when we lost two people who were very close to us.

The first was an uncle,a cousin of my mother's, who worked with my father's business for more than 40 years. Besides humoristic squabbles about football, politics and regionalistic joking (my father is from the Peloponnese and my mother - and her relatives - are Cretan) they never exchanged (in all that time) an angry word. It was he who brought my mother there to work as a secretary and that is how she met my father.

He died of lower respiratory tract infection, caused by multi-resistant nosocomial bacteria, as a result of a two-month long hospitalisation because of a massive cerebral infarction.

The second was a distant cousin of my father's. He was a farmer, a rock of a man who could make a cow ( A COW ! ) kneel with his bare hands, with thunderous laughter and continuous good humour. His house was like the halls of the kings of Olde, always open, with food always on the table and beer and wine continuously flowing for any man that should chance to pass by.

For him I have these lines from a very old poem:

Hwǽr cwóm mearh, hwǽr cwóm mago? Hwér cwóm máððumgyfa?

Hwǽr cwóm symbla gesetu? Hwǽr sindon seledréamas?

Éalá, beorht bune! Éalá, byrnwiga!

Éalá, þéodnes þrym! Hú seo þrág gewát,

genáp under niht-helm, swá heo nó wǽre!

( Where is the horse gone, where the young rider? Where now the giver of gifts?

Where are the seats at the feasting gone? Where are the merry sounds in the hall?

Alas, the bright goblet! Alas, the knight and his hauberk!

Alas, the glory of the king! How that hour has departed,

dark under the shadow of night, as had it never been!

Lines from the Anglo-Saxon poem "The Wanderer", translated by Professor JRR Tolkien).

He died of lower respiratory tract infection caused by multi-resistant nosocomial fungi and bacteria, as a result of a three-weeks long hospitalisation because of worsening chronic obstructive pulmonary disease caused by non-small cell lung cancer.

The relatively long course of these two deaths, along with the prolonged suffering that comes with such cases served to illustrate to me the meaning of a much abused and misused word.

Love.

You were not there. You may have seen similar cases. But you were not there (except for you Dennis - the family holds great gratitude) to witness with your own eyes.

Not for one minute were they alone. And not just make-believe concern. Their neighborhoods were silent for weeks before they died.

But what you should have seen were their wives. It was not despair. It was not histrionics.

It was the WILL to fight. To help them live. I tell you, if Death had to come to get them in a physical form, black robes, sceletal fingers, scythe and all, he would get a right-royal kick up his buttside. This is not Sweden where one might think to settle these matters in a game of chess.

You should have heard their words. Spoken because they knew they would never get another chance to tell them how they feel. They were the only times in my life that I cmae close to witness an Ideal. No speeches, no paeans, no flags, no ceremonies have ever come close to that.

Still, their lives together were ending. But, the certainty of that was not a cause of despair for them. If anything, it was an embarassment to the great entity that is supposed to watch over our lives and rule wisely, in an omniscient and omnipotent way...

I have seen Love transcend the concepts of Death and of Universe. And that, in the face of two aged, uneducated and bewildered women.

What a mighty lesson that was.

PS.

Today is the birthday of Professor JRR Tolkien. If he were alive, today he would be 116 years old. Details about him and his works are widely known.

I will only say that his undying legacy comes from his unwillingness to compromise in anything that had to do with his views on language, art and morality. He faced everything with the stature of someone who holds the moral high ground and has genuine love for what he does.In this manner, he created the last true epic of our civilization and helped turn our scholarly eyes to an age which we thought barbarous and obscure simply because the Glory of the Roman Legions had faded.

And speaking of love, Tolkien was buried with his wife. The stone reads:

Last Post of the Year:
Supermodels in lingerie and Prussian Generals

About two years ago I was walking in Kifissia with a beautiful and very elegant friend of mine. At some point we stopped to admire a shop window that had Victoria's Secret lingerie on display. To be quite honest, I didn't hear her comments because I had performed a com
plete shut-down, picturing her in Victoria's Secret undergarments (and later, off them).

I do remember making a clumsy attempt at a compliment along the lines of "Let's go now, if I saw anyone escorting a lady as beautiful as you checking out Victoria's Secret lingerie, I would kill him out of pure jealousy".

(Marisa Miler at 2007 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show Photoshoot, ©MMVII, CBS Broadcasting Inc. All Rights Reserved)

Anyway, the fact is that as each year reaches its end there are two things that I am particularly looking forward to: Victoria's Secret Fashion Show at the beginning of December and the Neujahrskonzert of the Musikverein at the beginning of the following year.

The thing that makes lingerie modelling so special is that, although perfect measurements may be enough for a modelling career, they are not nearly enough for lingerie.

You see, a lingerie top model embodies perfection itself (in a very literal sense, if I may say so).

She has to be very pretty (forget about Gaultier's aliens on the catwalk) and she has to have a KILLER body (not a flat ironing board).
And since Victoria's Secret employs the best of the best, well...they see to it that each year has a more than magnificent sendoff.

Since this is the last post for this year, let me just wish that the next year brings Lots of Sex, Peace on Earth, Good Will to Men.

Until then let's just be glad that they did not use a nuclear warhead on Benazir Bhutto, right after they shot and blasted her, just to make sure...

PS: On 30 December 1812,Generalleutnant Hans David Ludwig Graf Yorck von Wartenburg, commander of the Prussian expeditionary force angainst the Russians and General Hans Karl von Diebitsh of the Imperial Russian Army signed a truce, known as the Convention of Tauroggen. It was a political gamble by Yorck, based on the strong anti-french sentiment. This effectively ended the Prussian alliance (enforced by the Treaty of Tilsit) with that bastard Napoleon, opening the way for Prussia to ally with the Brittish and kick some french butt.

The Nightmare before Christmas:
An observation and a dedication

Recurrent themes are the staple of poetics. They are usually motifs that we have come to recognise as universal truths or the natural outcome of things. Loved ones separated by the magic of villains, evil people having their vices turned against them and so on.

As it is, one of the most ironic things is to see otherwise powerful and clever people fall into such traps because arrogance or dire need or passion or a combination of all of these elements made them behave like cartoon villains.

I am saying all these things because several days ago I watched the digital 3D remaster of Tim Burton's "The Nightmare before Christmas". Among other poetic leitmotifs, it shows the time-honoured universal truth that a free-spirited woman cannot be trapped in a tower as a piece of property, like Rapunzel (as Dr. Finklestein, in the movie, tries to keep Sally the Rag Doll locked in his tower).

Indeed this notion appears in poetic creation about as frequently as the belief that no real gain can come from bartering with evil spirits.

This prompted me to write about Hedy Lamarr and how that idiot austrofascist husband of hers tried to keep her trapped in a meaningless existence as a simple showpiece. It is in times like these that one realises how blind to some simple facts people can be.

How can a wild spirit be trapped? How can lock and bars and pig-headed obstinacy match the wiles of a determined mind?

For some people, freedom is simply non negotiable.

My dearest friend if you don't mind
I'd like to join you by your side
where we can gaze into the stars

and sit together, now and forever
for it is plain as anyone can see
we're simply meant to be...

Women, pt. II : Hedy Lamarr

Any list with amazingly extraordinary women should include Hedy Lamarr.

Most people in the technology business remember her from the 1998 lawsuit against COREL because of their unauthorised use of her likeness on the cover of CorelDRAW 8.

However they have more reasons to remember her.

Née Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler in Vienna in 1913, she quickly became famous for her astonishing beauty. Max Reinhardt (the director, not the banker) called her "the most beautiful woman of Europe". What is not widely known is that "Hedy" was not only a wild spirit, but a mathematical talent as well.

When she was 20 years old, she starred in the "Symphonie der Liebe" or Ecstasy as the film became widely known. This film became famous for two scenes: Lamarr chasing her runaway horse naked, and a closeup of her face in orgasm (an expression which was achieved by her director pricking her with a needle).

Shortly after that film, the, notorious by now, Eva Kiesler married a fascist named Mandl, an Austrian arms dealer. The idiot sought to bind her in a golden cage, to keep her locked in his tower (in a future post I will return to comment on this kind of idiotic behaviour).

Even though this was a cruel period in her life, it offered her the opportunity to come in contact with
scientists and technicians in her husband's employ and thus become acquainted with the technical applications of mathematics.

Naturally, this state of thing was not to last and the wild Hedy fled away from her husband. In her autobiography it is written that while she was being chased by her husband's men, she sought refuge in a brothel. While she waited in an empty room, a customer walked in and Hedy had to have sex with him so as not to blow her cover. Even though the ghost writer of this book was later accused of taking too many liberties in its embellishment with fictitious incidents, it would not be something that the free-spirited girl would not do to secure her escape.

The rest of it is well known, since after her escape to America, via Paris and London, Hedy Kiesler (who adopted the name Lamarr in tribute to Barbara LaMarr) became a world-famous actress, starring in such blockbusters as Samson and Delilah.

Great actors and powerful figures went out of their way simply to admire her beauty, and she had several marriages, including a Texas oil magnate.

What was the twist in this fairytale life of a legendary bombshell?

Hedy Lamarr was a communications technologies genius innovator.

Indeed, in cooperation with Georg Antheil, who was conducting experiments on automated control of the frequencies of electronic musical instruments, Hedy Lamarr (as H. Markey, by the name of her second husband, Gene Markey) submitted the design and blueprints for a secure communications system ( Secret Communication System, U.S. Patent 2,292,387, 1942).

That patent proposes (very early considering the development of such technologies) the use of frequency-hopping (now an integral technique of spread-spectrum telecommunications) via a mechanism like a piano-roll. The proposed use was to make radio-guided torpedoes more reliable and impregnable to enemy interference.

Spread spectrum technology was declassified in the 80s and CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) became available to meet the needs of more efficient bandwidth use (since signals do not "occupy" a part of the spectrum each) and of increased privacy for wireless communications.

However, no use was made of that system or of Hedy Lamarr's mathematical talents for the war effort.

Still the legacy remains. In her own words:

"Films have a certain place in a certain time period. Technology is forever"

What a woman.

Women, pt. I :
Lotta Svärd and the Winter War

At last, the weather is cold enough to be called wintry. And speaking of winter, it is time to bring back some memories.
Bear with me for a short course of History.

On 30 November 1939, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics opened a massive offensive against the young Finnish republic. This would be the Winter War (SWE: Vinterkriget).

2 weeks later, on 14 December, exactly 68 years ago, this illegal invasion caused the Soviet Union to be expelled from the League of Nations which once more proved "as effective as a catflap in an elephant house".

Using ponderous and outdated human-wave tactics, the Soviet generals led their men to a fearful slaughter (in the time-honoured fashion of the First World War, men were expected to "march very slowly towards the enemy machine-guns", as Captain Blackadder would put it).

The Finnish forces, holding the Karelian Isthmus Fortifications according to the Grand Plan of Field Marshall Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim, decimated whole divisions of Soviet troops using superior tactics and the excellent knowledge of terrain by their s
kijaeger, machine-gun and sniper troops.

The brave stance of the Finns and the many foreign volunteers (including, for a very brief period, Christofer Lee) led to a relatively mild peace treaty that ceded only 10% of Finnish ground to the Soviets (since victory would be impossible in the end, against the greatest army of the world).

Now who was Lotta Svärd ?

Förrn den ädle kungen i Finland stred,
Hon blivit en krigsmans brud;

(Ere the noble king to Finland's shore,
She'd become a warrior's bride.
When the drums beat, and Svard went off to the war,
She followed him stride for stride.)

(Poetic English translation by C.W. Stark, C.B. Shaw and C.D. Broad)

Lotta Svärd is one of the most important characters in Johan Ludvig Runeberg's epic poem Fänrik Ståls sägner (Ensign Stal's Tales, Vänrikki Stoolin tarinat in Finnish). It speaks of the bravery of the men who tried to defend the Finnish lands during Russia's war with Sweden after the Treaty of Tilsit (The Finnish War, 1808-09), even though the whole affair was poorly planned and the cause was doomed (the Fortress of Sveaborg capitulated in 1809 and Russia took possession of Finland).

During this war, Lotta
Svärd followed her husband faithfully, carrying supplies for the men in the army, like a noble version of Mutter Courage...

Following her example, after the bitter civil war of 1917-18 and the Indipendence of Finland from Imperial Russia, Finnish women organised in paramilitary groups of volunteers to help the nation in that time of dire need.
(Lotta Svärd logo, with heraldic roses and crux gammata. Designed in the early 20's, it has nothing to do with the nazi swastika and ideology. National Socialism had practically no followers in Finland, and with the rise of the nazis in power, Finnish-German relations deteriorated).

The organization grew and along with it grew its contribution.
By 1923 the Lottas had collected more than 500000 finnish marks to help refit the M91/24 7,62 mm rifles of the army with new barrells (hence the rifle was named "Lotta-rifle").

When the Winter War broke up the Lottas volunteered for every auxilliary post imaginable, freeing as many men as possible to join the Army for the brave defence of their country against bolshevism and Stalinist oppression.

It was, however, at field paramedical service that the Lottas excelled.

In their blue-gray uniforms, their hair drawn back tightly , they were radiant angels of light and hope for every wounded and sick man. They worked tirelessly to alleviate the pain of those unfortunate enough to have seen the real face and cruelty of that desperate war.

Their selfless contribution was the definition of the nursing ideal and of the sense of duty and faith to their men and their country.

Thus, I choose to start with these volunteers, ideal after that legenderay figure of Lotta
Svärd, for my series of posts about women.

Faith and duty. Courage, compassion and love. That's who Lotta
Svärd was.
